What is 'Marshalling'?
We are the dedicated motorsport fans that give their weekends so that motorsport is possible. Without us there would be no racing, from Karting to Formula 1 they all require us.
What do you do?
As Marshals we perform many tasks as there are many disciplines, ranging from Medical and Fire Crews to Time Keeping. We are 'Course / Incident' Marshals. This means that we deal with anything that happens during the course of a race, and between races. This could be anything from Oil on the circuit to a major incident requiring rescue crews and helicopter ambulances.
How much do you get paid?
Absolutley nothing, we are volunteers and as such we are people who do it for the love of the sport and therefore we are the best marshals in the world and the world over looks to Great Britain for advice and training, especially new to motorsport countries such as Bahrain and Turkey.
Why do you do it?
If you love motorsport you will know that there is nothing like seeing it live. The sights, sounds and smells cannot be reproduced on TV. As a marshal you get the best seat in the house, right in front of the action betweem the spectators and the Armco Barrier and experiencing the speed as the cars hurtle past you in excesses at times of 180mph only six feet away. Since we have been marshalling we have met some fantastic people, and after a days marshalling there is nothing better than going back to the campsite, taking the weight of you feet and having a cold beer with great friends. Sure standing in the rain can be a bummer at times but the good times definately out way the ocasional damp times
Is it dangerous?
Is crossing the road dangerous? Only if you don't pay attention and are not aware of the dangers that are possible. Likewise being a marshal carries inherent dangers but, as with all things that are dangerous if you are sensible and use some common sense these dangers are reduced significantly. But on the other hand as with drivers, marshals have died in the course of their duties and chosen hobby. Perhaps the small element of danger adds to the exitement of a days racing?
